The True Jesus Uncovering the Divinity of Christ in the Gospels David Limbaugh 9781621576372 Books Reviews

  • How could an ancient carpenter from the tiny town of Nazareth be the most influential human being to ever walk the earth? Who was Jesus and how does His life affect yours? Like a captivating tour guide, David Limbaugh leads you through the brilliant and sacrificial life of Jesus of Nazareth and inspires you to connect your life with the Savior—the true Jesus. There are few books better about life’s most important topic!
  • “The True Jesus” is the type of book that I wish I had had access to during the years when I was seeking answers. It provides a clear, concise and historical view of the Gospels and the divinity of Jesus Christ. David Limbaugh has combined the four books of the Gospels into a single narrative to tell the life and ministry of Jesus. The book flows well though the notes and quotes, while backing up the next, do break the flow from time to time.

I appreciate that Mr. Limbaugh has included the history of Israel during the period between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament (the intertestamental period) and that of the years of the early Church. I have studied the Bible over the years but have never focused on the period which is not covered in it nor of the beginnings of the Church itself. Mr. Limbaugh's history of these periods are informative, interesting, and helped explain the social and historical context of the time in which Jesus was born, ministered, died and was resurrected as well as the time in which the Church began and grew.

For me, reading has always been how I seek information and books which answer my questions are ones that I appreciate the most. “The True Jesus” is just the type of book that I will want to keep on hand and provide to others who are asking and seeking answers. My personal copy is on a as I appreciate being able to change the font size and to add audible narration to it; however, I like to purchase and gift hardcover and paperback books to others.

I have not read Mr. Limbaugh's other books but I will certainly be seeking them out. I'm reminded so much of Lee Strobel's “The Case for Christ”, not that these books are duplicative in nature but rather they are similar in subject and in the clear cut and modern voice in which they are written. It doesn't take a theological background in order to read and understand this book. It takes an open mind and a seeking heart.
  • The True Jesus
    By W E Johnson
I just started reading the book. I have read through the Bible three times in my 73 years. David's book is like having someone read the Bible to you, but explain all of it, like a gentle easy going friend.
  • After playing around in my youth, (lots of bad choices and consequences) I was lucky to find Christ when I finally did. Changed my life in good ways both early on, and more and more as the years went on. I've been a daily bible reader (avg.1 to 5 pages daily, very nearly daily) for over thirty years now. I have read quite a few books from the Christian book stores over the years which have also helped me learn and grow. I bought the kindle copy of this book with narration and loved it so much, that (when about half-way thru the book) I ordered a hardcover to have on hand for when I want to go back and flip between pages and chapters that I want to re-read. Was this boring or unpleasant, like work?..No, not at all. I was refreshed in a very satisfying way. I hope others will enjoy this book as I have. When it comes to Christ and Christianity, I have friends and children that don't know what they're missing.
  • The meat of this book is essentially a chronological overview of the life of Jesus based on the New Testament gospels. The book presents this material by "harmonizing" the accounts of the four gospels. For example, an event which is described in three of the gospels would be presented together in one section. The author would then try to break down what's really going on and also bring in the views of others.

    What I liked
    1. Theologically rock solid.
    2. The author is extremely even handed and careful in his interpretations.
    3. The other scholars, writers, and pastors he cites (as far as I'm familiar) are all highly respected.
    4. He treats all scholarly viewpoints with great respect.
    5. Although the book appears to be primarily from an evangelical perspective - he even cites Catholic and Lutheran opinion.
    6. The structure of going chronologically vignette to vignette.

    Where it could use improvement
    1. I felt some sections did not have enough actual bible text quoted - forcing the reader to reach for his bible (if they have one).
    2. I felt sometimes the author would go down rabbit trails discussing various theological positions (although in general this is a strength)
    3. The book is described as 256 pages - it's really 353 or about 450 total with notes etc. Could this be too much for the casual seeker?

To summarize, I enjoyed this book and author helped me to see some things more clearly. I would definitely recommend this book, however, I'm not sure if it's the first book I'd offer to the casual seeker. For those really trying to understand Jesus from a true theological perspective, this book definitely succeeds.
  • Very interesting to note that as of this writing Mr. Limbaugh's book has only 3 reviews, while the book sales are at the top of three categories at . Really? I thoroughly enjoyed the read, found it extremely informative, thoughtful and very engaging. I would humbly recommend Mr. Limbaugh's tome to anyone who seeks to deepen an understanding of Christ, Lord and Savior.
  • I've been looking for a practical, in depth, study of the scriptures. The book provides that and then some. A really great book that allowed me to reconnect with my faith and rekindle a love for scripture.
